Air Meditation

In the beginning was the word…
And the word was God…

How do we create our words, but by first taking a breath.
Filling our lungs with air, and and releasing it.

Air is constantly moving
We can not keep it
It is not mine, nor yours
Air teaches us the most important lesson
Letting go
Breathing in, I am here
Breathing out, I let go

Water Drumming

While in the Flowing Hollow, I felt the pull of the water. The sound of its song, calling for a beat. <3 Drumming with the water helps release things we are having a hard time letting go. Grounding us in the present moment. Enjoy <3

The Magick of the Flowing Hollow

The Flowing Hollow is a beautiful magickal place at Burns Valley Herbals and Retreat.

Water flows from the spring out of the mountain, into a little creek.

Stones border the creeks edge, creating a path through this magickal water world.

There is more to the Flowing Hollow than water, there is an abundance of life from the earth, and a breeze from the wind. The stone circle brings the warmth of fire to all who gather around. There is also so much spirit, you can feel it.

I am so blessed to be able to spend time down in the Flowing Hollow and am excited to share its magick with others!

Here is a video of it in the day time,

Here is a video of it at night!

MAEOE 2020: The Shore

In February I had the pleasure of attending and participating in the 2020 MAEOE conference: Exploring Connections: Linking Nature, People, and Mindfulness.

The conference committee reached out and asked if I was interested in creating the logo for the conference, of course I said YES!  Art, nature, people, and mindfulness are all passions of mine. It was such a fun project to work on, and they asked me to create the logo again for next year’s convention: Climate, Nature, People and Education: It’s All Connected.

February 6-9, 2020, the Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education brought together educators, resource personnel, scientists and researchers to share their experiences and ideas at the Princess Royale in Ocean City, MD. The weather was all rainy and cloudy most of the time, but we had a nice sunny day and a beautiful clear sky for a beautiful full moon.

The weekend began on Thursday with breakfast at the Bayside Skillet, it was delicious and hugemongous!  Perfect for keeping my fueled for the amazing Leopold Educational Program workshop. Peggy Eppig shared with us the land ethic and conservation education of Aldo Leopold.

Aldo Leopold was an American author, philosopher, scientist, ecologist, forester, conservationist, and environmentalist. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin and is best known for his book A Sand County Almanac, which has sold more than two million copies.

This full day workshop was full of learning and inspirational moments. We first went outside to the beach to spend time in nature. The beach provided a moment of clarity as well as discovery, of self and the world around me.

Learning about land ethics was a transformative moment for me. I am ever grateful for what Peggy shared with us that day.  I see another layer to my being and how it all connects to the path of knowledge of self.  Creative expression is simply a part of the whole. Our interconnectedness to all of creation is the energy, stewardship is the interaction of our connectedness…the product is beauty and love through creative expression.

Friday was a day of  hands-on sessions. One session I attended that day was taught me how to dye with natural plants. We experimented with cranberries, turmeric, and onions to name a few. I was excited to take it back to school and share it with my students!

Friday was also full of social time! I love that MAEOE schedules in time for us to network and mingle. We had lunch, a first timers meeting, and happy hour! I also created a banner for people to fill in with their intentions for the conference! It turned out so cool!

Fridays field experience was a trip to the Indian River Lifesaving Station. That place showed me the shore in a whole new light.

Saturday sessions were jam packed and the exhibit hall was super busy. There was a silent auction in which I won a few things!  Then we had a social dance costume party in the ballroom. MAEOE had an Eco Superhero contest that Ridgely entered! My green club students turned me into Rainebow Earth Brite! The kids made everything from recycled materials! My motto was I turn litter into glitter and trashy into flashy! We didn’t win the contest, however it was SUPER fun!

I left on Sunday after a morning meditation.

The shore gave me clarity and peace, to my center and on my journey in this life.

Quarantine Art Series: Sitting Stone

Every now and then it is important we go outside and sit.

To listen to the wind blow around us, and feel the earth beneath our feet.

Sitting stone is just the place to do that at Burns Valley Herbals and Retreat.

I enjoyed sitting at the bench and painting the mountains!

I am looking forward to when others can enjoy this beautiful space with us!

I feel like the summer solstice will be the perfect time!

Diving Deep – Into the Unknown

Diving deep into my shadows, I’ve found a level of insecurity in presenting myself in this new realm of reality.

I am used to engaging and interacting with people of all ages and all backgrounds, in real life. Being in a room of 30 middle school students working on their art produces an energy like no other.  Interacting with people one on one while I share the gift of henna produces an energy that I have only found through that interaction.

The giving and receiving. I receive from each person and each student, just as I am giving to them. There is nothing like giving gratitude to each person for sharing their time and energy with me. I would always say, I couldn’t do this without you.

But now I am forced to continue on my path without the real life interaction from other people. So I dive deep… to find ways I can be me, and do what I do without other people around. How do I give my gifts without that energy of the room of students, or the one on one contact with another person?

This is proving to be more difficult for me than I would’ve imagined. I am coming upon so many blocks in my mindset. Now I realize, a deeper shadow I am facing… Insecurities, unworthiness, and self doubt when it comes to presenting myself when there is no one around to reflect back to me.  Each person is like a mirror, and I judged how good I was based off of how good everyone else felt. Like their happiness and pleasure in creating was a direct reflection of who I am.

Without those people around… I am here feeling a bit empty.  Doing instructional videos online won’t be the same as instructing people in person. This new venture brings up fears surround my ability to share who I am with others and how others will receive what I am giving when not being in the same physical space. I guess it’s just the energy of the week, with the Scorpio full moon, and the adjustment to this new norm in our society at the moment. The only way I will find out is if I keep moving forward and try something new.

I wonder if there are others out there feeling the same way… feeling a sense of loss from the energy of the classroom, or a sense of insecurity in switching our presentations over to a digital platform. I am sure there must be others feeling like I am.

The Frozen movies come to mind… just let it go and head into the unknown.

The big karmic lesson is to learn to let go of the past and more forward into the new paradigm.  Let go of the fear, and keep moving forward one step at a time.  Remember to have compassion for and be gentle with yourself. The one thing that matters in the end, is simply being your own best friend. You are doing amazing things in this new world. Thank you for sharing what you know, and who you are, with the world. <3

Quarantine Art Series: Deer Medicine

The universe speaks and gifts us in many different ways, we have to be open to receiving.

Finding a deer skull was a perfect synchronicity for the energy of the current time.

This entire experience is teaching us on so many levels. One thing I’ve noticed we are all learning, is how to have compassion for those that might offend us. Deer medicine helps us to remember to have grace through all of life’s challenges. One way to do that is to develop the ability to adapt quickly to any situation, towards love and compassion.

We have had to adjust a lot in a short amount of time. Our world has flipped into a state that none of us ever believed could or would happen. When we are grounded and centered, we can hear our intuition reminding us to be gentle with ourselves and each other.

Deer medicine helps us walk the path of love with full consciousness and awareness, to know that love sometimes requires caring and protection, not only in how we love others, but also in how we love ourselves.

Let’s remember to be gentle, to touch the hearts and minds of wounded beings who are in our lives. Don’t push people to change, rather gently nudge them in right direction, as a doe nudges her fawn.

Love and accept people as they are.
The balance of true power lays in love and compassion.

Quarantine Art Series: Flowing Hollow

The sound of flowing water is so grounding to me.

Sitting in the woods, sun shining down on my face, hearing the birds chirp and the water rushing… food for my soul.

I have walked down to the Flowing Hollow a few times the past month here at Burns Valley Herbals and Retreat.  The space has really transformed since March!

When we first arrived, Brenda and Joe had just cleared out the brush, and tree debris. They started laying stones for a pathway next to the little creek, and created an area for a fire pit!

Thanks to the help of many friends, there is now a beautiful space to enjoy a bonfire by the water, you could even hang a hammock and camp down there for the night!

Brenda and I dug out the steps, Austin moved the rocks and created the fire pit, and Theo is building a bridge.  We also added a few little fairies and gnomes to live down there!

Water is life, and when structured with intent… it allows life to flourish.

Sustain vs. Sovereign

What does it truly mean to sustain something?

Sustain comes from the latin root words that mean ‘from below‘, to ‘hold’.

  • bear (the weight of an object) without breaking or falling.
  • undergo or suffer (something unpleasant, especially an injury).
  • cause to continue or be prolonged for an extended period or without interruption.

If we really analyze the definition, to sustain something seems to be contradictory to keeping something alive.

Think about it, Life happens because of its duality… death.

In order for things to grow effectively, old things must pass away. We must let go of the things that no longer serve the highest good of the goal. If the goal is life, we must allow death to occur.

If we are simply sustaining life… we are bearing the weight of life, we aren’t living. We are undergoing suffering so that we can prolong life.

To cause something to continue or be prolonged for an extended period of time takes away from the natural order of things and disrupts the balance, with or without intent.

What does this mean for the idea of being self-sustaining?

Some people think being self-sustaining means to be able to take care of your life on your own. However by the previous definition, to be self sustaining would mean to hold yourself back, and to allow yourself to suffer for an extended period of time.

So perhaps when we speak of being able to be self staining
we actually mean to be self sovereign.

Sovereign comes from the Latin word super, which means ‘above‘. Amazing how changing one word changes so much!

Sovereign means:

  • possessing supreme or ultimate power.
  • acting or done independently and without outside interference.
  • possessing royal power and status.
  • very good or effective.

When we say self-sovereign, we mean to possess ultimate power of self and to do so independently. Its interesting that the archaic definition was to possess royal power or status. We all possess a power that only we have, and it’s what this journey is all about. Knowledge of self… exploration of self through creative expression.

This is not to say that sometimes being self-sustaining isn’t important. We must all ground ourselves in order to be reminded of our power and the ability we have to create a beautiful world with our actions.

Remember in the beginning was the word… let’s be impeccable with our words and use them wisely.

Quarantine Art Series: Mullein

Deciding on a topic for my quarantine art series, I tend to take a minute to listen to what the universe is showing me. I felt drawn to the garden this day…and the beautiful leaves of the mullein plant.

Courage, health, love and protection.

These are things we are all hoping, praying and wishing for during this quarantine time.

Mullein represents all of these things. The leaves of this plant used to be placed into little satchels under one’s pillow to keep away nightmares, and to attract love, health and protection. In fact, it was believed that wearing mullein would ensure fertility, and also keep potentially dangerous animals at bay while in the wilderness. Mullein was also used to help treat respiratory problems, and can be used as toilet paper!

The universe speaks through all things… mullein being synchronistic to COVID-19 in so many ways! Reminding us that nature provides all of our needs, if we are open and willing to listen and receive.
