First quarter down…

What an eventful first quarter it has been!

My student artists have completed a variety of projects, focusing on the Elements and Principles of Art along with other techniques. They have had multiple opportunities to be Ceeqers and to really personalize their learning.

Our first big project was our locker name tags. It was a group decision by our faculty to hang plastic sleeves on every locker with the first installation being a name tag for each student. So in art class, every student created their own personalized name tag that focused on an element and principle of design.  The results were fantastic! Our halls went from dull grey lockers to a personalized space that the students truly feel is theirs.

The 8th grade GT Artists created puzzles to represent the Elements and Principles of Design, using multiple materials and techniques!

Student artists in my studio created Zentangle masterpieces next! We did contour line drawings of objects, then artists chose any object or image they wanted, and zentangled it in with patterns and designs. After creating their zentangle objects, artists experimented with watercolor to create a fun background.

We have had a lot of fun so far, I am looking forward to more fun!! The 8th grade GT artists are working on their Mantle of the Expert presentations where they have to create an art materials sales persona and will present their art material at an art expo. Half of the class will perform and present their materials and activities while the other half are the artists looking for art materials to work with. Each art material salesperson has to create a vendor table with at least 5 techniques, 2 art examples, a 5 minute art activity, and business cards.

6th and 7th grade artists went outside today and created nature art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy! Each group took photos of their work in progress to create a stop motion video of their art coming to life. Some artists decided that they would like to create a time-lapse video on their phones!

I hope you enjoyed our projects as much as we did creating them!!

Hampton National Historic Site, Artist in Residence

I have recently been honored by being elected to the Board of Directors for the Historic Hampton Inc. non-profit organization. HHI works with the National Parks Service for the Historic Hampton Site. Their mission:

…to promote directly the historical, scientific, educational and interpretive activities of Hampton National Historic Site and to accept gifts, contributions, or loans and otherwise engage in fundraising to finance and pay for the above mentioned activities in respect to which no funds from the Federal Government or other sources are available.

I am working with a few lovely ladies on the Arts Initiative, bringing art and education together using the collection at the Hampton National Historic Site. The mansion was preserved mainly because of its art collection, mostly due to the piece “Lady with a harp” by Thomas Sully, a great american painter. portrait-of-eliza-ridgely-the-lady-with-the-harp-056

This past weekend HHInc. hosted its first Boutique Art Show in the Orangery, at the Hampton Historical National Site featuring our first artist in residence at Hampton, Paul Moscatt.

Paul is a very talented and expressive plein air painter. I laughed many times this past weekend, Paul has a wonderful sense of humor. He will be holding a workshop for educators at the Hampton site, date to be announced. Check Paul out on his facebook page!

Life in Balance

I recently had the pleasure of attending a yoga and paint night at Life in Balance Yoga, with Misty Stillman and Traci Kelly.  It was my first time ever attending, and it was the first paint night that I went to and wasn’t the teacher! IMG_3797

We started the evening with a nice easy and releasing yoga session. Misty was awesome, the tone and pace of her instruction were perfectly matched. It was my first yoga class as well, I usually do Yoga with Adriene on YouTube, but I must say there is something very magical about being in a yoga studio with other people.

After yoga we enjoyed some food and wine, and socializing before we got started on our painting. When it was time to paint Traci took over and the creating began. I knew what the painting was going to be before hand, and I had already felt like I wanted to do mine a bit different. Traci was more than happy to let each of us work as we pleased. The other ladies stuck with the painting style Misty and Traci picked out, but I changed mine a bit.

The evening was relaxing and fun. I had a wonderful time all around! Thank you ladies for hosting such a wonderful evening!! Check out Life in Balance Yoga on Facebook!

A nice place for a wedding …

On October 17th The Stone Mill 1792 hosted a wedding event with multiple vendors from photographers, caterers, a dj, and party planners! I attended the event and advertised my artistic services for personalized wedding gifts, bachelorette painting parties, and live event painting.

The weather started out sunny and beautiful but quickly changed to cloudy and cold. None the less, the event was hosted in such a nice spot it didn’t matter much. People from all over attended the event!

I had such a wonderful time meeting people and networking with the other vendors! I met so many people and made some new friends.

When I arrived, I set my table up next to the wonderful photographer, Summer Kelley. We hit it off right away, she was so easy to talk to and so much fun! When the crowd dwindled, I had her to keep me company! Summer’s a freelance photographer based out of Baltimore Maryland, a M.I.C.A. graduate, and currently works as senior photographer for an estate auction company in Towson. She is passionate about working with local businesses and helping out around her community! It was such a pleasure meeting her and being able to spend the day next to her. Her energy was light and fun and her photography is unique and beautiful, I would highly recommend her.

On the other side of me was my dear friend Cindy from Glen Rock, with Flowers by Cindy! I met Cindy three years ago when I first started my painting party adventure. She had great advice for a first time small business owner, and beautiful floral arrangements. When I started painting parties at The Stone Mill, I was thrilled to see her arrangements decorating the place! Her sweet energy and a beautiful personality reflect in her arrangements.

Lavender and Locks is a floral and cake designing company in South-Central Pa. They had samples of their cakes, which tasted delightful, and floral arrangements. I liked their marketing idea of posting a picture of yourself with their floral arrangement on Twitter and Facebook to be entered into a drawing for flowers. I had to take them up on it.

Tasteful Occasions, and FFF Catering were both catering companies at the event that had samples available for guests to try. I have to say Tasteful Occasions had a great spinach artichoke dip, and FFF Catering had an amazing pulled pork bbq.

After trying all of the delicious savory food, I sampled some flavorful cupcakes from Sprinkles Specialties. They provided chocolate, pumpkin and vanilla with raspberry! All three flavors were a perfect balance between sweet icing and moist cake.

And with all this food, there was great music playing. KLOCK Entertainment kept the jams flowing with great tunes. Adam Grobman was an awesome DJ with a great attitude and took my music requests!

Room Tone Productions is a company created by an artist named Patrick. His passion is for documentary filmmaking, but has worked on various film productions for Investigating Discovery, Food Network, and public services announcements for the City of Philadelphia.  His hope is for Room Tone Productions to become a creative force to help people tell their stories through films, animations or web videos. He is also interested in helping with world, and does so a little at time by using recycled, eco-friendly DVD packaging for his event packages, and business cards from Loktah and Cards of Wood. In talking to Patrick I could hear his passion for his art through how he talked about what he did, and by looking at one of the wedding films he produced that was playing at his table, I could see it come to life. I am so glad to have met Patrick and Sarah at the event.

The event planners, Party Belles were also in attendance at the event.  Michelle was a great representative for the company, outgoing and full of great ideas for wedding planning, coordinating and decorating. She has earned the title celebration specialist!

IMG_4301

Artists Leigh Ann Hawkins and Michal Ann Boyd were also vending at the event, with their company Inside Out Upcycles. They recycle and reuse materials to create beautiful pieces! I was so inspired by their work that when my students do their paper mache projects I am going to use their work as examples !

When I have attended events like this in the past, I never really stopped to appreciate all of the amazing things humans do…usually if you’re at an event its because you are looking for something, whether specific or just as a time filler.  But as a vendor at this event, I was able to see it from a different perspective and get to know the vendors as amazing and talented artists and entrepreneurs. Thank you everyone for taking time to share your stories, thoughts, ideas and energy with me. It was truly wonderful meeting you all.

MAEA Conference 2015

The 2015 MAEA conference was definitely a nice experience for me. When I arrived at Centennial High School, in Ellicott City, I was happy that there was plenty of parking available because there were a LOT of teachers attending the conference. Teaching artists lined the halls with their own personal art for sale, and there were a decent amount if businesses with information and free gifts.

Julia McTighe was one of the teachers vending her creations. She makes the most unique and fun earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Along with hairpins other great art! Her shop is called A Marvelous Spark, and she is definitely that! You can follow her shop on Instagram. Julia is an art educator for Baltimore County Public Schools.

Dick Blick had a nice pencil case that included a small sketchbook, a tube of paint, and coupon for 20% off of orders of $49 or more, and free shipping. Sargent Art had a gift pack of acrylic and tempera paint samples, Sculpt-it! clay, a pencil, and lesson plans. Sax school art supplies had a small pencil case with Crayola construction paper crayon sample, a colored pencil, metalic Sharpie, Prang classic marker, and Faber-Castell gel stick sample.

There were a few schools vending like Virgina Tech, Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville, and The Art Institutes. The programs at CCBC Catonsville look fantastic! I took a lot of my art classes at Harford Community College and my teachers were also professors at MICA and Towson. My years at HCC were definitely valuable, and I learned a lot from the professors.

Art with a heart had a table, as well as The Phillips Collection, Walters Art Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The Phillips collection had a great lesson for Arts Integration called Prism.K12. It is awesome! Check it out for resources for arts integrated lessons!

The keynote speaker  was Cindy Foley, an art educator who started changing the minds of people everywhere about what art education actually is… Teaching thinking. She works at the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. Cindy spoke on TED talks about the importance of teaching students thinking. Her vision lined up nicely with the CEEQER model!

I can and I WILL…

Wow, September just FLEW by!! I was absent the first two weeks of school because of a family emergency, my other half is feeling a lot better today. Not being at work those days was a big challenge for me, not only with taking care of Theo, but missing school. Its tough when you’re gone for one day let alone eight! There is an energy to being a teacher and starting school, and when I finally returned to work I had to mentally prepare myself to have that same energy so my students wouldn’t miss out on all the amazing things I had planned just because the plan didn’t go the way I thought it would.

I am totally enjoying my students. We are having a wonderful time exploring and experimenting. The energy in the classroom studio buzzes with excitement and creative thinking. So far the worst part of my day is when school is over and I have to wait for the next day. Seeing the progress they are making on their projects and with their artistic expression brings me such joy!

Students are currently completing their name tags which will be inserted into plastic sleeves that will be adhered to their lockers! Every student in the building will have a plastic sleeve attached to their lockers to share their art, good grades or just a positive message.

The GT 8th grade art class just completed their first sketchbook homework assignment; use every material in their exploration packets to create a piece of art. Students needed to also come up with one new technique for using a material.

Students also have more blended learning, the 6th grade class has started our lighthouse digital conversion this year. Each student has a device with them every day.  This has been wonderful in the art studio. Students are able to look up reference images that they might need to help them with their projects, or even just listen to music while they work.

Our school system is starting a new objective statement for what the students will do in class. They are call the “I can” statements. I believe the I can statements are a great start, but without the will to do what you know you can do…nothing would ever get done! “I will” means I can and I am going to. I want to and I can!  That is what being a C.E.E.Q.E.R. is all about, knowing we can and then putting the effort into doing. Creating, Exploring, Experimenting, Questioning, Expressing and Reflecting.

Grow with Me Chalkboards…

Grow with me, Chart me or Birthday chalkboard…what ever you might call them…they are awesome.  I recently started creating them when a coworker asked if I would make her son a Dr. Seuss themed chalkboard for his 1st birthday photoshoot.

Text, Art and Painting OH MY FAVORITE! I jumped on the opportunity right away. I simply love making art for people when they have an idea they really want, there is a sense of excitement I really enjoy seeing in people when they see their ideas come to life! It fills me up.

IMG_3655

After I completed the board I posted a picture online in a group I belong to, and received another order! This time it was a girly horse themed board. For this board I pretty much had free reign on how I designed it. I only received a few images of horses and lace that my client wanted so I was able to implement a lot of my own design ideas.

IMG_3789

I am very pleased with how it turned out! I love the lace the mother chose. Now I have another order from a friends mother for a little boy “non themed” board. I am working on the sketches now, it needs to be completed soon because his birthday party is October 10th, which just happens to be my birthday!

Art Class Southern York Wine and Painting Party

Learning to Paint…

Ive decided to go at the paint nights from a little different angle. Instead of covering up our mistakes with wine, we will learn to paint and then create our own masterpiece using the techniques! My most recent endeavor is “Learn to paint: Tree edition”.  I created multiple examples of how we can blend colors to create different skies, and use dark values to create silhouettes in the foreground.

The next Learn to Paint session is on October 11th, 2015 from 2-5 at The Stone Mill 1792. We will be exploring blending colors, and making trees. I hope those attending will bring ideas for their piece so I can assist them in creating something they’ve always wanted.

Impossibility is relevant to no thing…

…possibility is relative all things…

This has been such a busy two weeks!! Now that school has officially started, in back in the grind of it all. Our week long professional development was pretty awesome. Working side by side at school with some amazing teachers! My room is all organized and I am loving it!!

It feels even better with students in it! Students started this week, and I am really enjoying this “no fault” year! I can’t wait to get into the creating! Seeing the excitement in the students is amazing… They keep sharing all of the ideas they have for projects! Mostly they’re into claymation or stop motion and videos! It’s definitely a YouTube generation.
