Neurographic Art

Recently my students and I have been creating Neurographic Art drawings! It has been such a wonderful process, that I thought I would share it incase you had not heard of it.

Neurographics is a way of drawing that recreates the outer from the inner. The world is a reflection of the beliefs we hold.

NeuroGraphic Art

A way to allow a person to transform one’s stress and fear by drawing freeform lines and then later using a specific algorithm to transform the stress into a beautiful work of art.

Neurographica™ is a simple and effective method for working with the subconscious mind through drawing. This creative method stimulates new neural pathways by combining art and psychology. It was discovered and developed by Pavel M. Piskarev, PhD, a Russian architect, psychologist and creativity entrepreneur. This art style deals directly with our thoughts and emotions in a non-interpretive, non-dogmatic and thought-free way.

Neuroplasticity

Neurographic art

The hand and brain are connected, and in tandem, or we would not be able to pick up or touch what is in front of us.

Neurographic art uses that connection to loosen and redirect the habitual thought patterns that create fear and confusion and creates a new way of thinking and being.

A new line; a new neural pathway.

Algorithm

  1. Use a dark color to draw a wide scribble on your paper.
  1. Think of a problem or issue you are facing while you draw the line.
  1. Find any sharp corners where lines cross or turn and round those, filling in the gap with ink.
  1. Add “field lines” or shapes that extend to the edges or overlap, then round any new corners.
  1. Add color!
  1. You can turn some of the lines into something recognizable or keep it abstract.

I felt way more relaxed while I was focused.

It made me feel more focused.

Reflection

How do you feel? How did you feel going through the process?
The reflection process is one of the most important aspects of this practice. When one does this activity with intention and focus, there will be an affect on their perspective of the situation. Reflection asks for your attention on the matter. What did it feel like, what did you notice, describe where your thoughts went…

I feel like there is so much more that can be done with this, and I have only skimmed the surface!

Hopefully you have a chance to try it for yourself! I have created so many already! Let me know how it goes!

Quarantine Art Series: Blossom

Every day I wake up to the sounds of the earth blossoming, and I can feel myself mimicking her song.

Blossom means to develop, grow, mature and evolve. How fitting of a title for this moment.

Everyday we are being challenged to evolve past our preconceived notions, and things we thought we knew. We are being asked to mature in ways we might have always sidestepped. True growth happens in the shadows, in the spaces between.

Yesterday I posted a blog about how I found a red-tailed hawk… well I have to correct that, and after some further investigation it was actually a Great Horned owl.

The message from the red-tailed hawk was so important for me yesterday, and its amazing how the universe continues to speak to us no matter how we are perceiving our surroundings. Sometimes we overlook or over analyze things, but the universe is always speaking.

The Great Horned owl has a similar message… but one that I needed to hear today.

I have started this new quarantine art series from inspiration to take time to be in nature creating art every day. To help ground myself, while going through the emotional waters of this quarantine period.

The Great Horned owl feathers carry the power of the ability to connect to the quietude of the Divine. In the silence, you will find the support and solace you seek.

Facing our fears and seeing our shadows is the theme of 2020. The Great Horned owl lends enormous support for seeing into the shadow of our own unconscious and finding the fears and secret desires that motivate us.

Great horned owl spiritual meaning relates to fiercely defending what you believe in as well as staying strictly loyal to where you are most at home.  So perfect for this time where we are forced to stay at home and really commit to where we give our loyalty.

The owl will teach you about the wise use of warrior power and the amazing gifts of strength and courage. When you turn these gifts to focus on facing your own fears, you’ll reap the most reward.

Even though I was incorrect on my assessment of the bird skull I found the other day, the universe spoke to me with exactly what I needed to hear in each moment. This is what happens when we are open to receiving and are actively listening.

This is what happens when we begin to blossom.

Natural History Society

The Natural History Society of Maryland is a private nonprofit dedicated to conserving Maryland’s natural heritage and educating its citizens on the natural sciences since 1929. We are a volunteer-run organization with a few part-time staff. We manage a small museum in Baltimore County where we offer programs, lectures, workshops, and courses on a wide variety of natural science subjects. The lower level of our building is a collections facility that houses over 200,000 natural history specimens and artifacts.

They recently hosted a Teachers Night at the museum, a free event for teachers to learn about and experience the museum in order to get inspired to collaborate with local organizations.

I talked with Natural History experts of fossils and geology, competed a museum-wide scavenger hunt and left with resources for my classroom.  All teachers that attended received a complimentary year membership to NHSM. During the visit I made a connection with the Fossil Curator of the museum who delivered an amazing set of fossils to our school! The students started using them right away.

Students used the fossils as a reference to create a new character for their parade drawings!

I am so glad I attended the event and excited about new possibilities with integrating environmental education into my art classroom.
