CSAE 2021 Chair-Elect

CSAE stands for the Caucus on the Spiritual in Art Education, and is a group of individuals that come together to support the connection between spirituality and art.

The Caucus on the Spiritual in Art Education (CSAE) seeks to:
• Study the relationships between the spiritual, the visual arts and art education in ways that advance pedagogy, research, scholarship, museum and artistic practices related to the spiritual in art education at all levels of practice and in diverse teaching and learning contexts.
• Embrace the study of inclusive and diverse content, images and ideas related to the spiritual within contemporary and historical multicultural art and visual culture and a holistic art education paradigm.
• Develop and nurture a community of art education professionals committed to advancing the understanding and application of the spiritual in diverse art education contexts.

CSAE Chairs

I was recently voted as Chair Elect for CSAE, which means I will serve as Chair from 2022-2024. I will follow an group of amazing leaders.

Peter London was a Co-Founder for the caucus back in 2008.

CSAE

Peter London is an artist, master teacher, art therapist, international lecturer, and author of many texts on art, spirit, and nature, including No More Secondhand Art and Drawing Closer to Nature. He has offered his holistic approach to teaching art to thousands of students of all ages, from “art phobics” to professional artists in museums, colleges, art centers, and centers for holistic studies. He is Chancellor Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association.

His book No More Secondhand Art was an inspiration for me when I transformed my project based classroom into a studio based classroom. I was introduced to the book when I attended a Summer Teacher Institute at MICA back in 2009. We were asked to create a tree that symbolized our life and our journey. It was a powerful exercise in visualizing parts of self.

Peters work with art and spirituality has been inspiring to me, and I am so honored to be building off of what he helped to start!

I have had to pleasure to meet and work with three other former chairs, Patricia Rain Gianneschi, Nancy Brady and Sheri Klein. I am so grateful for such a wonderful team of people to work with on bringing more light to the spiritual in art education!

Art is Prayer

“How breathtaking it is to start out on a journey into the unknown. To start off in new directions takes courage, and faith. Faith that even when there are no external signs to indicate where or how we should proceed, we are not lost.”

These paintings are dreams and visions from within, brought to life through layers of colors, lines, shapes and energy. Each painting was uncovered through a process of intuitive exploration. Five of these paintings reflect a journey to the Divine I AM inspired by a series of tarot cards. Each painting embodies and is attuned with the frequency of a specific tarot card.

Art is a powerful tool, not just for gratification of self-expression, but as a vehicle of transformation.

Art is Prayer, a sacred and vital discovery of one’s own special presence in the world.

Through creation, a person illuminates and illustrates their inner being, while creating something which also stands separate.

Through exploration and experimentation each of us can shine light on our inner world, allowing us to utilize expression as a means of awakening our Divine I Am.

“The root and full practice of the arts lies in the recognition that art is power, an instrument of communion between the self and all that is important, all that is sacred.”

Peter London, No More Second Hand Art.

My art is hanging at Reiki by Rickie‘s in Harrisburg until the end of June and last night was the wine and cheese reception! It was an amazing time sharing and communing with friends. I realized after last night that I really enjoy talking about my art process and about the images and meaning behind my paintings.

Its really fantastic to hear other people talk about my paintings. To see my work through new, different eyes. Its amazing to hear that what they feel from my work is exactly what I was thinking and putting into the painting. I am so grateful for those who showed up and everyone’s positive feedback and support. We are all on this journey together… I know when I am at my best and centered my own energy shines light on each of your beautiful souls and the amazing gifts you have to offer the world… and when you shine your light you help me see myself more clearly.

NAEA in NYC

This year I attended the 2017 National Art Educators Association Convention in New York City. I have attended this convention more than a few times and every single year is amazing. Not only do I take home lots of art goodies, I take home new ideas and inspiration for my teaching.

Aside from attending a fabulous convention, I am blessed with opportunities to visit different cities and make friends with people from all over the world! There are so many benefits from attending the NAEA convention!

There are always awesome pre-conference workshops to attend, so I arrived a day before the convention started to attend the Journal Fodder Junkies workshop! Eric Scott and Dave Modler are two very talented art educators and wonderful people. I really enjoy seeing them every year, and following their artistic journeys! This workshop was a great opportunity to explore materials and learn new techniques for journaling.

I was blessed to stay at the Warwick hotel with a few of my colleagues and other amazing art educators! We had such a fantastic time learning and exploring NYC! My dear friend Linda made us beautiful friendship bracelets and took us on a perfect tour around the city. It was Saint Patrick’s day weekend so we ate lunch at an Irish pub called the Pig and Whistle. It was delicious!

I was able to be a vendor at the Artisan Gallery this year. There were many amazing artists selling their works! Its so awesome seeing art educators with their creations, very inspiring.

There were 7,000 attendees this year at the convention, the most ever! The exhibit hall was packed! This year, the hall was divided into three sections which I feel made it a lot easier to navigate around all of the people! There were wonderful make and take learning stations and many new art supplies to experiment with… and a few famous people I had to take photos with ..

The middle school round table session was one of my favorite sessions. We were able to see 7 different art educators and learn about their favorite art unit and receive resources.

My most favorite part of the weekend was the Caucus on the Spiritual in Art Education Issues Group studio event with Peter London. This was EXACTLY what I needed. The whole weekend was not only a great professional experience, but it was also very spiritual and eye-opening for me on a professional and personal level. The session was a hands on experience that allowed the participants to open up and see art education from a more holistic perspective.

The last night I was able to meet up with friends I made back in New Orleans in 2015, when I attended my first #K12ArtChat on twitter! I simply love these beautiful souls, Matt and Laura Grundler. If you are on Twitter, you should check them out!

All of this was packed into a 4 day weekend, full of learning, growing and building lasting relationships with amazingly talented artists.

To all of my old friends and new, thank you for being you
