Blue View

I love meeting new people who have a vision for their passion! We have been in the Spring Grove area, since December and every time I drive home I pass this blue house at the top of this beautiful hill! As I round the bend on my street, the view of the many green hills at the feet of the Appalachian mountains shine blue from the reflection of the sky. I had no idea that when spring came, there would be beautiful flowers and delicious produce at the bottom of that hill!

One day I decided to stop when I saw a woman putting flowers out at the stand by her driveway. It was around 7 am, and I pull in right behind her, get out of the car and introduce myself right away! So excited that there are such beautiful flowers right down the road from my house! I have been on this new ritual of filling our home with bouquets of fresh flowers, I explained to her. Jen is her name, and she owns Blue View Farm.

Jen shared with me that she does monthly subscriptions, and does custom orders! For our summer solstice ceremony weekend, Blue View Farm created and donated 4 lovely bouquets and a large center piece!

Quarantine Art Series: Deer Medicine

The universe speaks and gifts us in many different ways, we have to be open to receiving.

Finding a deer skull was a perfect synchronicity for the energy of the current time.

This entire experience is teaching us on so many levels. One thing I’ve noticed we are all learning, is how to have compassion for those that might offend us. Deer medicine helps us to remember to have grace through all of life’s challenges. One way to do that is to develop the ability to adapt quickly to any situation, towards love and compassion.

We have had to adjust a lot in a short amount of time. Our world has flipped into a state that none of us ever believed could or would happen. When we are grounded and centered, we can hear our intuition reminding us to be gentle with ourselves and each other.

Deer medicine helps us walk the path of love with full consciousness and awareness, to know that love sometimes requires caring and protection, not only in how we love others, but also in how we love ourselves.

Let’s remember to be gentle, to touch the hearts and minds of wounded beings who are in our lives. Don’t push people to change, rather gently nudge them in right direction, as a doe nudges her fawn.

Love and accept people as they are.
The balance of true power lays in love and compassion.

Ridgely Gardeners

Yesterday we had a master gardener come to green club! She presented on pollinators, and pollinator gardens. We learned a lot of information about the different types of pollinators there are… did you know the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly was the Maryland insect?

We have a pollinator butterfly garden which was created about 5 years ago. Over the past few years, the garden had been neglected due to a transfer of responsibility. Taking on this new role as green school coordinator, the transfer of information from the last coordinator was not easy. After experiencing this, I have decided its best to keep very well organized records. I plan to remain the green school coordinator for a while… but if I were to move on from the position, I want to be able to give the next teacher all they need to be successful in the endeavour of keeping the green school climate going. If my goal is to assist in a climate and culture shift in perspective in terms of reducing the amount of pollution and waste…then it only makes sense I keep in my the future of what I am creating and not only thinking of the future of the earth. Micro/Macro. I’ll talk more about this in an upcoming blog.

Big thank you the PTA who sent out a signup genus to find some parent volunteers. There were 3 parent volunteers who were a HUGE help.

Our garden turned out completely transformed, and we now can start to think about planting some more pollinators, and adding some type of art installation! It was such a wonderful time, being in nature and helping the pollinators!

Poinsettias

A poinsettia is more than just a beautiful red petaled Christmas plant!

Did you know that it is indigenous to Mexico and Central America!

The Aztecs used the petals to produce a red dye and the white sap from the steam is an antipyretic medication… which means its a FEVER reducer! The Aztecs call the plant is called Cuetlaxochitl, meaning “flower that grows in residues.”

Today it is known in Mexico and Guatemala as Flor de Noche Buena, meaning Christmas Eve Flower. In Spain it is known as Flor de Pascua or Pascua, meaning Easter flower. In Chile and Peru, the plant became known as Crown of the Andes. In Turkey, it is called Atatürk’s flower because Atatürk, the founder of the Republic, liked this flower and made a significant contribution to its cultivation in Turkey.

The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th-century Mexico, where legend tells of a girl, commonly called Pepita or Maria, who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday and was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson blossoms sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.

I find it so interesting that the plant comes from a specific place in Mexico, and had medicinal purposes, yet when I grew up learning about it I was told that the white sap was toxic and I could get sick from it.  Before doing a little exploring and questioning, I did not see it for anymore more than just a decorative plant!  Now reflecting on this fact…I know that all plants from this earth have a purpose that benefits the human race in one way or another. This is an important thing to be conscious of when realizing the amazing power we have to be self-sufficient.

All of this research came about because of my learn to paint poinsettia class! It was a nice party, and we created some beautiful paintings! Thank you ladies for coming!!
