Reflect and Create again

2015 was a year of progress, it felt as though I sprinted to the end! Everything moved forward and fast.

I like to write down all of the amazing things I’ve done in an ending year as  a reminder to be grateful for what I have and to be excited for what’s to come in the new year.

As I sit here and make a list in my head, I realize I did a lot in 2015.

I taught amazing adults how to let their creative self out and go with the flow. Meeting so many new people and making some really close friends.

The networking I did at events opened up doors and gave me new inspiration. My creativity really exploded into making new pieces of art and selling a lot of it.

I’ve learned that I really enjoy making grow with me chalkboards, and personalized art. Looking to make more art in 2016 and really market my work as well as my abilities as an artist and an instructor.

I see many opportunities to share what I know with people everywhere and amplify the creative energy in the world! In April I will be teaching a continuing education dreamcatcher class at Catonsville Community College, and have been asked to do a dreamcatcher workshop at a friends yoga studio. In July I will be teaching two classes during summer camp at the community college as well.

There were a few unexpected professional development travels. In March I went to the National Art Education Association Convention, and learned all about new art supplies and networked with new friends from twitter. The 2016 NAEA convention will be held in Chicago on Saint Patrick’s day weekend…and I will be there! I have already registered for the artisan gallery where art educators set up and sell their personal work! I visited Fort Worth Texas in June for the Balfour Advisor Workshop and Malibu California in July to attend the Balfour Ignite Journalism Workshop. I am also looking to take some students to Malibu this year for the workshop!

This year I had the privilege to become a new board member for Historic Hampton Inc.. So far this experience has been one of the best, working with amazing people to represent art and education at a national historic site! We’ve teamed up with our first artist in residence, wrote an arts integrated lesson plan to use with the site as well as held our first artist educator workshop! There is so much to look forward to in 2016…another artist educator workshop before spring, and a painting day with our artist in residence.

2015 started with a great softball season as my first year coaching my middle school’s girls softball team and in August I began my 7th year teaching at Ridgely Middle School, with a new principal and a whole new way of doing things. Learner centered environments are the way to go, and digital technology really does enhance learning. I am really enjoying the kids having devices available. The Seesaw app is really turning out to be a great way to keep portfolios! I can not wait to do more projects with my students and see how they use the C.E.E.Q.E.R. model to find solutions to the curriculum! Soon I will have completed my department chair training and I will be applying for the pool of candidates. Perhaps there is something new waiting for me at the end of 2016.

I also started blogging more. I made it a point to at least write once a month; I will be making it a goal in 2016 to write once a week. Using instagram to share our students awesomeness, along with what’s happening in the school, was a huge success. I also started tweeting more, and building my #PLN (professional learning network.) #k12artchat has been my favorite thing to do on Thursday nights, and has even inspired me to create a chat of my own (keep an eye out for more details coming.)

I spent a lot of time with my two amazing children this year, watching them grow and learn. They have really been a light and joy. We made a lot of crafts and went on many new adventures. I am so excited to see what we do in 2016!

I feel like I might be leaving things out, but man was that a lot!

Poinsettias

A poinsettia is more than just a beautiful red petaled Christmas plant!

Did you know that it is indigenous to Mexico and Central America!

IMG_5719

The Aztecs used the petals to produce a red dye and the white sap from the steam is an antipyretic medication… which means its a FEVER reducer! The Aztecs call the plant is called Cuetlaxochitl, meaning “flower that grows in residues.”

Today it is known in Mexico and Guatemala as Flor de Noche Buena, meaning Christmas Eve Flower. In Spain it is known as Flor de Pascua or Pascua, meaning Easter flower. In Chile and Peru, the plant became known as Crown of the Andes. In Turkey, it is called Atatürk’s flower because Atatürk, the founder of the Republic, liked this flower and made a significant contribution to its cultivation in Turkey.

The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th-century Mexico, where legend tells of a girl, commonly called Pepita or Maria, who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday and was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson blossoms sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.

I find it so interesting that the plant comes from a specific place in Mexico, and had medicinal purposes, yet when I grew up learning about it I was told that the white sap was toxic and I could get sick from it.  Before doing a little exploring and questioning, I did not see it for anymore more than just a decorative plant!  Now reflecting on this fact…I know that all plants from this earth have a purpose that benefits the human race in one way or another. This is an important thing to be conscious of when realizing the amazing power we have to be self-sufficient.

All of this research came about because of my learn to paint poinsettia class! It was a nice party, and we created some beautiful paintings! Thank you ladies for coming!!

Inspiring Through Art at Indigo 8-6 Day

Ten days ago I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Indigo 8-6 Day at Sonnewald Natural foods farm in Spring Grove, Pa.

IMG_1515

Indigo 68 LLC is a wonderful organization that should be shared with all. “Project Indigo has many missions, but its primary goal is to raise awareness of the social, economic, environmental, and psychological issues facing our society… Indigo is hope, truth, and unity, through research, mediation, networking, humanities, marketing, and publishing.”

I was fortunate enough to find out about this amazing event. Some amazing people got together and created this event in a months time – Sera , Michael , Malcolm to name a few! There was Yoga all day, music playing and amazing vendors.

The Creative Balance table was set up for people to come and create!
I taught those who stopped by how to mix colors, and paint to create a beautiful chakra style painting!
I also sold a few paintings!

At the end of the this beautiful day we did Luna Yoga, and sent Chinese lanterns off into the stars.

It was a perfect ending to a wonderful day! I met a lot of people and made a few new friends!

The next day I received a message with a picture of me in the newspaper!! Thanks John A. Pavoncello!

Summer, where did you go!?

July just flew by, and August seems to be following along! I think it might have something to do with all this nice cool weather, or just the fact that ALOT has been going on!

We went on the Steam Into History train ride! It was so much fun! I am going to be doing some art crafts on the train starting in September! It was awesome hearing about all of the history around our new town!

We’ve been hiking a few times on different trails in York County. The La Ho trail was a beautiful hike!

My friend Elizabeth and I went to the Summer Event at The Stone Mill. Oh it was a lot of fun…and its a beautiful place. The owner and I have discussed doing painting parties there! I am so excited!! Its a great opportunity!

It has been a summer of opportunities!!

Nixon Park

IMG_1169

This was our view today when we went to Richard Nixon Park. It was a beautiful day for a hike!  Landyn and I came to this park with his class on his first field trip….

I realized right away we would have to come back with Element and Theo.

We were going to hike the long trial, but because of the recent storms it was closed.  We were still able to hike a few other trails, including the geology trail which was really interesting.  They had a self guided brochure about the things that were on the trail.  Quartz is everywhere in this area.  I wonder if there is a place to go digging for quartz close by. I have want to add something I’ve dug out to my crystal collection…

Second Saturday

So this Saturday was the Second Saturday on the Square in York.

We woke up early and decided to head out to the festivities around 10:30. We weren’t sure what to expect because this was our first time, but we were looking forward to some fun crafts and art!

When we got there were began the photo scavenger hunt… #ssots

IMG_1093

Though we didn’t get very far because we were having to much fun enjoying the balloons and the music!

Landyn put glass pieces together on the Second Saturday logo mosaic mural.  Then Element and Landyn painted some puzzle pieces to go up in another mural. But the best part was the balloons!

Oh and seeing Element get her face painted for the first time! She was such a good girl. She sat so still and quiet, and when it was all over, Justin Plotkin took some photos of Element in the mirror checking it out!

"SECOND SATURDAY"

It was such a wonderful day! Very much looking forward to August!

Super moons and Sunsets

With the beauty of the sky every evening,
we should be in awe of the universe and give thanks for all of the things the day has given us.

With the beauty of the sky every morning,
we should be in awe of the universe and give thanks for the infinite amount of possibilities available to us.

Our sunset paintings delicately manifested themselves on our canvases while the wine flowed.

We had sweet and salty, and dark chocolates as our guides. Along with the sweetest of Blackberry wine from Logan’s View Winery, Moscato pink Champaign and a nice Cabernet Sauvignon.

The palm trees danced in the cool breeze after a hot summers day.

Camping Much!

Its been looking like July is the month for camping! Though I really want to go to the beach!

So we went to Codorus again! This time with the kids! Landyn is 6 years old and Element just turned 2.  Landyn asked all day to go camping he was so excited to go! He woke up early and made everyone get up and get dressed and packed!  Little did he know the adventure that waited for him!

IMG_0977

We got to Codorus and no one was there! A huge difference from the first time when it was just me and Theo.  This time we were able to go back into the “roughing it” section; which wasn’t really roughing it at all. All roughing it meant was that you were surrounded by more trees and you were further from any bathhouse.  The sites were huge and very secluded! We were in site #9, it was nice because there was an open area where you could see the sky, but the rest was trees.  We were also closer to the water! We took a nice little hike down to the boat launch.

It was a great afternoon…and then the storm rolled in! We did not check the weather before we left the house…but when we heard the thunder we felt we could handle it. Then the wind started picking up! All the while we were trying to cook dinner!! We had chicken breasts on the campfire and ramen noodles cooking!   then it starts POURING! So I pick up Element and Landyn and run to the tent…as quick as I got to the tent, the wind picked up enough to blow over two trees in a site across from us.  Theo yells to me…GET IN THE CAR! So I take the kids and run to the car…I didn’t really think it was that bad..it came in so quickly. Luckily, it left as fast! The chicken cooked, it wasn’t too bad, and we cooked the rest of the noodles on the propane grill after it stopped raining.

That evening we took a walk down to the water and it was the most beautiful sunset!

It was a great adventure!! Can’t wait to do it again.  Oh yeah, and Landyn wanted me to mention that he found a slider turtle!

Happy July

20140706-124358-45838530.jpg

What a wonderful weekend it has been! I had a great time playing cards with some friends, camping and hiking, and spending time with my family!

We usually travel west to the Appalachian trail…but yesterday we decided to try something new. We headed out to Codorus state park. We have lived in Glen Rock for a year now and have only spent a short amount of time there.

We arrived at the campgrounds around 5pm, and were able to get a tent site but there were only about 3 to choose from. The tent site was $23 for the evening.

Back country camping is more of our thing and Codorus has a “roughing it” loop of sites, but they were all filled. So campsite 13 in loop A was ours for the evening, a large site with lots of space. It’s close to the general store which is a little shed that they use, it’s operated by volunteers. They have a nice selection of things you might have forgotten or ran out of, and they have dark chocolate snickers bars and coke if you need a treat. They also sell wood, a wheel barrel for $10 or bucket for $5.

It was very peaceful last night, after the fireworks. We grilled chicken over the campfire and made Ramen noodles to go with it!

I always find dinner in the woods on a campfire tastes the best. And we enjoyed the darks chocolate snickers for dessert.

When we woke up this morning we packed up and headed for a little hike. The Mary Ann Furnace trail was beautiful. An easy hike with a few hills and water.

We are definitely going to be spending more time at Codorus. Thinking our next adventure will be Kayaking!

Happy July!
